Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Between the ages of 17 and 21 the last of our permanent teeth begin to emerge. The third molars, or more commonly known as the wisdom teeth, are the final set of teeth that come into your mouth. Every patient’s dental health is unique to them. Some patients are born without wisdom teeth, some never surface, while others need to have them removed for many different reasons. Regular dental care with Dr. David Pereira will help you know your personal wisdom tooth situation and if any dental treatment plans will be necessary.

It is important to understand that some slight discomfort during the emergence of your wisdom teeth is normal. However, if you ever experience intense pain, swelling, or stiffness, it is important to see your dentist immediately.

There are many reasons patients have their wisdom teeth removed. The removal of wisdom teeth is a standard procedure that many adults will have done in their lifetime. Dr. Pereira will help you to determine if you need the procedure. Dr. Pereira will discuss all of your treatment options with you and help you to make informed decisions for your oral health.

Whenever possible Dr. Pereira can often perform your wisdom tooth extraction in the comfort of our Darien CT dentist office. For complex cases, we may refer you to a local oral surgeon for appropriate care.

Reasons for Removal

Impacted Wisdom Teeth:
If your wisdom teeth are impacted, they are trapped in the jaw in bone. Having impacted wisdom teeth can cause infection, pain, and can even move your other teeth.

Trouble In the Future: It may be recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed before they ever emerge. Dr. Pareira can take digital x-rays during a routine dentist visit that can show the progression of your molars. If Dr. Pareira thinks they may cause you dental concerns in the future, we may recommend removing them before they get the chance to cause any discomfort or damage.

Braces: You may need to have your wisdom teeth removed if you are going to have braces or any other orthodontic work done. Dr. Pereira would remove your wisdom molars to provide more space for your other teeth to spread out into your healthiest smile.
